A few years ago, Lufthansa ran an ad, which was titled ‘Heimweh’ (nostalgia), featuring two brothers of Japanese descent who had grown up in Germany. The ad showed a visit by the brothers to Japan and the scenery captivated me. It didn't take long to find out that it was Yakushima, an island south of Kyushu Island, that is Unesco World Heritage site.
In November 2016 I visited Japan again, and this time I went to Kagoshima, where I crossed by ferry to Yakushima, where I was hiking through its lush rainforests and visiting some of its ancient trees, known as Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica), one of which (Jōmon Sugi (縄文杉)) is claimed to be up to 7000 years old.
